Afro Basaldella

Biography

Afro_36935

Afro Basaldella was born into a family of painters and embarked on an artistic career from an early age. After his training at an artistic secondary school in Venice, his brother, Mirko, a pupil of Arturo Martini, introduced him to the Milan art scene of the 1930s. When his brother moved to Rome, Afro then came into contact with the artists of the Scuola Romana and in 1937 had his first solo exhibition at the Galleria della Cometa in Rome.

During the 1940s, Afro’s work largely consisted of mural paintings, and he taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice until 1945. After World War II, he returned to Rome and began to attract a more international audience as the he established closer relations with the American art world, eventually participating in the XX Century Italian Art exhibition at the MoMA in 1949. In 1950, Afro travelled to New York and began a twenty-year collaboration with the Catherine Viviano Gallery. He gained a greater familiarity with the New York art scene of this time, which would greatly impact his style.

As part of the Gruppo degli Otto (comprising Afro, Birolli, Corpora, Moreni, Morlotti, Santomaso, Turcato and Vedova), founded in 1952, Afro maintained a clear artistic autonomy: the lyrical, emotive quality of his paintings went beyond the limits of figurative and abstract art, resulting in free, light brushstrokes reminiscent of American abstract expressionism.

At the 28th Venice Biennale in 1956, he was awarded the Painting Prize for best Italian artist, and two years later won the Guggenheim Prize in New York. Toward the end of the 1960s, his work began to take on a greater expressive immediacy and stronger sense of geometry in his forms. International exhibitions succeeded each other in the 1960s and 1970s in Italy and Europe, but in 1976, Afro died after a series of health problems. His work has continued to attract global critical acclaim in the years following his death.
